What families should know

Follow your child’s lead. Join the activity they already enjoy, then describe what is happening with short, simple language. Shared attention is often a better starting point than asking many questions.

Pause and make space. A few extra seconds can give a child time to process and respond with a word, gesture, look, or communication device. Respond warmly to every meaningful attempt.

Offer useful choices, repeat key words, and expand gently on what your child says. Your speech-language professional can help tailor these ideas to your child’s communication style and goals.
